MOVEMBER NEWS FACTS
Movember began in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia. The guys behind it joked about 80s fashion and decided it was time to bring back the moustache.  In order to justify their “Mo” (Aussie slang for moustache), they used their new looks to raise some awareness and money for prostate cancer research… never dreaming their efforts would lead to a global movement for men’s health. To date, more than 1,000,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas have joined together to raise over $175 million to change the face of men’s health.

Did you know? A man is 35% more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than a woman is to be diagnosed with breast cancer. 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their life time - 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.

Movember, the month formerly known as November, aims to change these statistics by creating a global focus on cancers affecting men. Each Movember, men are challenged to start the month clean-shaven and grow a moustache. The moustache becomes the hairy ribbon for men’s health and the guys growing them become a walking billboard for 30 days. The growth of a new moustache sparks hundreds of conversations about the seemingly taboo topics of men’s health and prostate cancer.

This November will mark the 5th Movember campaign in the Canada, which will continue to raise funds for Prostate Cancer Canada. In 2010, almost 119,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas used the power of the Mo to raise $22 million for our beneficiary partner.

Our research of 2009's participants shows that as a result of Movember

  • 62% of participants talked about men's health with friends, family or work colleagues
  • 30% of participants did some of their own research into the causes Movember supports
  • 39% of participants sought medical advice
  • 36% of participants encouraged someone else to seek medical advice
MOVEMBER’S MEN'S HEALTH PARTNER
In 2011 Movember will again be raising funds for our men's health partner, Prostate Cancer Canada.
